Overview
Use this workflow to update your credentials, billing, and compliance records with Moxie after you upgrade from Registered Nurse (RN) to Nurse Practitioner (NP). It covers what changes in your scope of practice, which credentials to submit, and what Moxie needs from you to keep your account, billing, and compliance records accurate.
When to use this workflow
Some steps only apply if your state grants NPs full practice authority, meaning you can treat patients without required Medical Director oversight. Always check your state's specific requirements before ending Medical Director oversight, since full practice authority rules vary by state and can change. If your state doesn't grant full practice authority, skip the Medical Director oversight phase below and continue working with your Medical Director as usual.
Confirm state requirements for full practice authority (FPA)
Full practice authority is not automatic. In most states, you need to submit a state-specific application and receive state approval before you have FPA.
❗ Important: Confirm with your state's board of nursing (or equivalent licensing body) whether an application is required and what the approval process involves before assuming you have FPA.
End Medical Director oversight, if your state allows it
Complete this phase only if your state grants full practice authority and you no longer need a Medical Director.
Confirm your state grants NPs full practice authority. If you're not sure, contact your Provider Success Manager (PSM).
Give your Medical Director written notice at least 30 days before your effective end date.
Notify the MD Team of your effective end date. The MD Team ends your Medical Director oversight billing on that date once you've given the required notice.
❗ Important — If you end Medical Director oversight without giving 30 days' notice, your oversight fee may continue billing past your intended end date.
Submit your license documentation
Send your Provider Success Manager (PSM) a copy of your NP license or your official board exam results.
✏️ Note — A program completion transcript isn't sufficient on its own. Transcripts confirm you finished your NP program, but they don't confirm you passed your licensing boards.
Complete a new collaboration agreement
Check whether your state requires a collaboration agreement between NPs and a Medical Director for prescriptive authority.
If required, work with your Medical Director to complete the Moxie collaboration agreement.
Some states require this agreement to be filed with the state board. Confirm your state's filing requirement with your Provider Success Manager (PSM).
Update your service protocols and standing orders
Archive any service protocols and standing orders tied to your RN license.
Request new service protocols for your services under your NP license type.
Ask your Medical Director to sign the standing orders generated with each new protocol request.
✏️ Note — Archived protocols can't be restored. Each new protocol request generates a new standing order under your NP license. It doesn't restore or reuse the archived version.
Update your insurance coverage
Contact your insurance provider to update your license type from RN to NP.
If you're no longer working with a Medical Director, ask your insurer to remove the medical director endorsement from your policy.
Confirm your policy still includes general liability insurance and malpractice insurance.
Enroll in pharma discount programs
As an NP, you may qualify for additional Moxie discount programs on weight-loss treatments, hormone replacement therapy (HRT), and exosome treatments.
Contact your Provider Success Manager (PSM) if you want to enroll in these programs.
Update your physical signage
Replace any signage in your suite that lists your RN license with your new NP license.
What to expect after these updates
Once your notice and documentation are confirmed, Moxie handles the following automatically. You don't need to take action for these:
Your Moxie Suite permissions update so you can clear your own good faith exams (GFEs).
Any GFE reviewers previously assigned to your account are removed.
Your protocols and standing orders are newly generated under your NP status as each new protocol request is submitted. They are not restored from your archived RN records.
✏️ Note — Your professional corporation (PC), management services organization (MSO) agreement, independent contractor agreement (ICA), and facility agreement do not need to be updated for this license change.
You'll receive confirmation by email if your Medical Director oversight billing changes.
Example
Priya runs a medspa in a full practice authority state and just upgraded from RN to NP. She gives her Medical Director 30 days' notice and notifies the MD Team of her effective end date, so her Medical Director oversight billing ends on that date. She sends her Provider Success Manager (PSM) her board exam results, archives her existing protocols, and requests new ones under her NP license. She contacts her insurer to update her license type and remove the medical director endorsement, then updates the signage in her suite.
